日本でトーマス・エジソンを知らない人はいないですね？
すでにご存知かもしれませんが、この有名な話を英語と日本語でご紹介します。
Your son is addled を Your son is a genius. と言い換えたエジソンの母. この言い換えがなかったらエジソンはオハイオ州のこの小さな家で埋もれていたかもしれません。
One day Thomas Edison came home and gave a paper to his mother. He told her, “My teacher gave this paper to me and told me to only give it to my mother.”
His mother’s eyes were tearful as she read the letter out loud to her child: “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself.”
Many years later, after Edison’s mother had died, he was looking through old family things. Now one of the greatest inventors of the century, he suddenly saw a folded piece of paper in the corner of a desk drawer. He took it and opened it up. On the paper was written: “Your son is addled [mentally ill]. We won’t let him come to school anymore.”
Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child that, by a hero mother, became the genius of the century.”
ある日、トーマス・エジソンは一枚の紙を持って家に帰り、母親に渡しました。
「先生からこの手紙を渡されて、母さんにだけ見せるように言われたんだ」と彼は言いました。
母親はその手紙を読みながら、目に涙を浮かべ、声に出して息子に読み聞かせました。
「あなたの息子さんは天才です。この学校は彼には小さすぎ、十分に教えられる優秀な教師もいません。どうかご家庭で教えてあげてください。」
それから何年も後、母親が亡くなった後のことです。
世紀を代表する発明家となったエジソンは、古い家族の品々を整理していると、机の引き出しの隅に折りたたまれた一枚の紙を見つけました。それを広げて読んだ彼は、そこに書かれていた言葉に愕然としました。
「あなたの息子は知的に問題があります。これ以上、学校に通わせることはできません。」
エジソンは何時間も泣き続け、その後、日記にこう記しました。
「トーマス・アルバ・エジソンは、知的に問題があるとされた子どもだった。しかし英雄のような母親によって、世紀の天才となった。」
私は昔、オハイオ州のエジソンが幼少期を過ごした家を訪問したことがあります。この写真にあるのがその家です。
このエジソンの生家のあるオハイオ州のMILANにこの写真にあるBIRTH PLACE OF THOMAS A. EDISON 「トーマス・アルバ・エジソンの生誕の地」と書かれたプレートがありました。
